The Church of St Hugh of Lincoln
St Hugh's was built as a mission church, serving the community that had increased in size along the Coach Road during the 1950s. It is the only church dedicated to St Hugh in the whole of the Bradford diocese. It was consecrated in 1963 and has been a faithful beacon of light in that part of Baildon ever since.
Back in the 12th century, as Bishop of Lincoln, St Hugh had strong links with schools in that area, just as today the church has good relations with Glenaire Primary School and the Salt Grammar School.
St Hugh was also renowned for standing up for the rights of the oppressed. Back in the 1970s, the curate of St Hughs led the initial protest against the proposed Aire Valley motorway that would have seen the destruction of local houses and recreational facilities. He almost got arrested at the start of a boistrous public enquiry.
St Hugh in his day also fought on behalf of the poor and the handicapped. True to his spirit, the church houses a thriving community centre today. It caters for young and old, able-bodied and disabled, with a wide range of leisure and skills-based activities every day of the week.
