The Reverend Canon John D. Nowell

Vicar of Baildon

John arrived in the Parish of Baildon in 1991 as Vicar. As well as being responsible for all the Anglican Church does in Baildon, John is also heavily involved in the management structure of the Diocese of Bradford, being the Vice President of Diocesan Synod and Chair of the Diocesan Advisory Committee.

As far as life in the parish goes John is the person to contact regarding baptisms, weddings and funerals. Typically on a Sunday morning you will find John leading the 0830 and 1000 Holy Communion services at St John's at the top of the hill in the Village.

The Revd. Paul Deo

Mission Priest

Deanery Children's Advisor

Paul was appointed 'Mission Priest' to the Parish of Baildon in January of 2007, though he grew up in the area and went to school in the parish. Most of his involvement here is in the areas of 'Fresh Expressions' (expolring different ways of being the church), contemporary worship, spiritual growth, mission and evangelism, and Children's Work. He is also the Children's Advisor to the Airedale Deanery.

Paul was a School Teacher before his ordination in 1997, and served as a Curate in Tong & Holmewood before being appointed as Vicar of Laisterdyke in December 2000. His main areas of parish life include 'SOAK''r:age' , The 11.30 and the parish study group. He is usually leading the services on a Sunday morning at both St. Hugh's and St. James's. Paul has played the guitar since the age of seventeen and is regularly invited to lead the music for contemporary worship events around the diocese.

It's Paul's 'dream' that the Church does all it can about the fact that much of society tends to view it in pretty negative terms, and that it eventually turns that situation around! There are places, though, where the Church is seen as relevant, even crucial, within its local community. Paul's aim is to do what he can to help the Church make better connections with the people of today's culture and society.

Paul used to play just about all sports when he was younger, but his main sports were football, cricket and volleyball, at which he represented Yorkshire. He plays golf now off a handicap of 15, and is a full member at The Bradford Golf Club, known locally as 'Hawksworth'. When a group of Christian in Bradford took over the running of the Cock and Bottle pub in the centre of the city, Paul was part of the 'Think Tank' supporting that venture.

Paul married Ros in 1984 and they have two children. Ros works part-time as a School Counsellor in a C. of E. Primary School in Bradford, and 'volunteers' as both a Bereavement Counsellor for the Marie Curie Centre and a Telephone Counsellor for Childline. Sian is 19 and presently reading Music at Liverpool University. She plays the flute and the piano. Sam is 16 and is in the VIth form at Dixon's City Academy in Bradford. He's a drummer, and plays with local band 'Negative Yellow'. He also drums for the Hope Bradford band at regular events in the Cathedral.
